JOB TITLE: Instructor COA (General/LLL)

POSITION GRADE/LEVEL: Personnel Policies, Schedule B (part-time, not benefit eligible)

HOURLY RATE: Depends on qualifications (FLSA non-exempt)

LOCATION: Duxbury Senior Center/Council on Aging

WORK SCHEDULE: Variable

SUPERVISION: Assistant Director and/or Program Manager

Statement of Duties:  Responsible for planning and leading educational program in the area of their expertise.  

Supervision Required:   Under general direction of the Program Manger, the employee plans and carries out the regular work in accordance with standard practices with substantial responsibility for determining the sequence and timing of action and substantial independence in planning and organizing the work activities, including determining the work methods. 

Supervisory Responsibility:  None 

Confidentiality:  Has access to some confidential information obtained during performance of regular position responsibilities in accordance with the State Public Records Law. 

Accountability:  Consequences of errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may include adverse public relations.

Judgment:  Well-defined or detailed rules, instructions, and procedures cover all aspects of work.  

Judgment involves choosing the appropriate practices, procedures, regulations, or guidelines to apply in each case.           

Complexity:   The work consists of a variety of duties which generally follow standardized practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines. The sequence of work and/or the procedures followed vary according to the nature of the transaction and/or the information involved, or sought, in a particular situation.

Work Environment:  The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of office settings. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant. 

Nature and Purpose of Public Contact: Relationships with co-workers and the public involving frequent explanation, discussion or interpretation of practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines in order to render service, plan or coordinate work efforts, or resolve operating problems. More than ordinary courtesy, tact, and diplomacy may be required to resolve complaints or deal with uncooperative or uninformed persons.

Occupational Risk:  Duties of the job present little potential for injury. Risk exposure is similar to that found in typical office settings.

Essential Functions:

1. Prepare course outline and weekly class plan.

2. Create and review educational program and prepare class materials for facilitation.

3. Lead interactive programming to enhance the life of the adult learner.

4. Complete facilitator evaluation at the end of each term.

5. Review participant evaluations for continual improvement of program.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Graduate of a four year college/university with a bachelors degree; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Special Requirements:  Must successfully pass a CORI/SORI and background check.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skill:

Knowledge:  Common policies, practices and procedures of the department and office operations; laws and regulations pertinent to position functions. Working knowledge of the Internet in support of department operations. 

Abilities:  Ability to interact effectively and appropriately with the public and co-workers. The ability to relate to older adults in a comfortable fashion with genuine interest, compassion and concern for their needs and feelings and willingness to function and communicate effectively within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities and cultural backgrounds. 

Skills:  Proficient personal computer skills, proficient written and oral communication skills. Effective customer service skills. 

Physical and Mental Requirements 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the position's essential functions.

Physical Demands: Demands may range dependent upon the program being lead. Work may require agility and physical strength to perform or demonstrate the skill being taught, work tasks could include intermittent to extended periods of stooping, walking, and standing. The employee may be required to lift, push, or pull objects such as equipment, chairs, and other related supplies up to 20lbs. Some Instructor roles may require little or no physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting and standing to perform work tasks. There may also be some occasional lifting of objects such as books, office equipment and paper.

Motor Skills:  Duties vary and could range dependent upon instruction being given. Skills may be largely mental rather than physical, the job may occasionally require minimal motor skills for activities such as moving objects, operating a telephone system, computer and/or most other office equipment, typing and/or word processing, filing, and sorting. Or required duties may involve close hand-eye coordination and physical dexterity. Manipulation and motor control under conditions that may require extreme accuracy could be required. 

Visual Demands:  Visual demands require the employee to frequently read documents for general understanding.
