PLEA Community Services is currently seeking a Regular Full-Time Counsellor for our Counselling Program. The proposed start date is January 7, 2019. This position requires union membership.
Our community-based intensive counselling services are provided to youth, adults, families and caregivers. The incumbent is responsible for providing counselling services on an in-office and outreach basis. Counselling services and interventions are provided on an individualized basis for the client in a multi-modal fashion. The goal of all counselling services is to reduce the barriers and challenges that clients face with strengths-based, tailored, therapeutic counselling approaches and interventions.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Develops strong collaborative relationships with individuals, families and caregivers to encourage their active participation in developing goals that address their concerns, and are sensitive to their cultural values and socioeconomic circumstances.
2. Provides clinical services that include: ongoing assessment of individual and/or family/caregiver functioning, relational systems and environmental constraints and resources. Develops and implements therapeutic approaches and interventions that recognize clients' unique characteristics and strengths as well as barriers. Supports positive, sustainable behavioral change as well as intrapersonal and interpersonal growth and development.
3. Addresses the complexity of client needs by assessing individual and systems functioning in an ongoing manner. Assists clients in identifying and creating relational and community supports.
4. Provides an array of counselling interventions including individual, family, systems, group and psycho-educational approaches.
5. Participates in collaborative practice and planning processes as part of a care team or team of professionals supporting the client. Provides consultative support to care team and/or collaborating professionals on an as-needed basis.
6. Develops collaborative relationships as needed with cultural and faith groups in the community to learn how to adapt services and resources so that they are sensitive to their beliefs and needs.
7. Provides conflict-resolution support and strategies for clients in their relational systems as-needed.
8. Responds to critical incidents, implements crisis intervention strategies that address the specific health and safety issues of those involved, and informs the manager when such situations arise.
9. Establishes strong connections to the community, including maintaining close working relationships with all formal and informal service providers.
10. Maintains necessary participant and program reports and statistics. Ensures that all records, reports, files and documentation pertaining to service delivery are accurate, complete and in compliance with PLEA's policies and procedures.
11. Adheres to all ethical principles and standards of practice in the counselling profession as it pertains to informed consent and confidentiality.
12. Adheres to all policies and procedures established by PLEA, and meets the performance expectations of the position in a manner that demonstrates compassion and respect for all person served. Exercises the responsibilities of the position in a manner consistent with the philosophical approach and mandate of the program.
13. Performs other related duties as required.

3. Strong foundation in multi-systemic, strengths-based and functional approaches to working with families, youth, adults and communities.
4. Demonstrated ability to promote behavioural changes through strategic and structural family and individual therapies from an eclectic and multi-modal perspective.
5. Demonstrated proficiency in facilitating others' growth using multi-modal approaches and the ability to work collaboratively with youth, adults, families and caregivers as well as other service providers in the community.
6. Demonstrated ability to develop strong collaborative relationships, work effectively as part of a team, use good judgment, manage conflicts constructively, work with a high degree of independence, and be accountable for results.
7. Excellent organizational, time and general management skills.
8. Sound, eclectic knowledge of counselling theory and approaches, principles, standards, ethics and best practices with respect to providing counselling services to youth who are at high risk and have complex needs, and their families and/or caregivers.
9. Good understanding of relevant Criminal Justice Legislation and policies, the role of Youth Court, Child Welfare Legislation and policies, the role of Youth Court, Child Welfare Legislation and policies including the Child, Family and Community Service Act; and applicable government legislation, regulations and accreditation standards.
1. A Master's level university degree in counselling, psychology, social work or a related discipline is preferred. A university degree plus one year's relevant experience is considered comparable.
2. Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) designation from the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors is preferred. Individuals in the process of obtaining their designation will be considered.
3. Two (2) years recent experience working directly with youth who are deemed to be high risk, and their families/caregivers.
4. At least one (1) year providing both individual and family counselling with regular and ongoing clinical supervision.
5. Demonstrated skills in working with families in crisis, providing individual and group counselling, and conflict management.
6. Demonstrated ability to organize and facilitate groups designed to provide counselling services and therapeutic interventions to a wide variety of participants.
7. Experience in the community social services sector with demonstrated working knowledge of community-based programs and specialized services.
8. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and familiarity with database programs.
1. Satisfactory Criminal Record Clearance.
2. Must possess a valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certificate or be willing to obtain one prior to hire.
3. Use of Personal Vehicle. This position requires travel in the Lower Mainland.
4. A valid B.C. Driver's Licence (Class 5 or Class 7), and suitable driver's abstract.
5. Monday to Friday schedule that includes days and evenings based on working 35 hours per week.
6. Documentation that the applicant is legally approved to work in Canada.
