Seasonal Forestry Roles
We are recruiting for the following positions:1. Forestry Crew Lead
2. Forestry Lead Hand
3. Senior Saw Labourer
4. Junior Saw LabourerWe will consider applicants for all roles based on skills and aptitude, and qualified employees may move into higher‑responsibility positions during the season.
Purpose of the Roles
All four positions support LFV’s forestry and silviculture work by performing field tasks safely and efficiently and maintaining a strong focus on health and safety. Work includes silviculture activities, chainsaw and brush saw operation, tree planting, wildfire support work, and safe operation of equipment and vehicles.
Role‑Specific Responsibilities
1. Forestry Crew Lead
(Reports to: Senior CUA and Forestry Supervisor)
- Independently leads a crew of up to 4.
- Ensures quality of all work performed and that crews follow LFV standards.
- Completes work progress reports, tailboard records, and all safety documents.
- Reviews and submits timesheets, inspections, and safety reports.
- Oversees vehicle and equipment maintenance and inventory.
- Ensures crews comply with SAFE Certification requirements.
(Reports to: Forestry Crew Lead)
- Assists in leading a forestry crew of up to 5.
- Ensures work meets Lil'wat Forestry Ventures' quality standards.
- Completes progress reports, tailboard records, and inspections.
- Reviews timesheets and supports equipment and inventory management.
- Conducts daily check-ins and reports incidents or HR issues to the Crew Lead.
- Maintains adequate equipment, gear, and fuel for daily tasks.
(Reports to: Forestry Crew Lead)
- Performs advanced forestry and silviculture tasks.
- Acts as an experienced resource for Junior Saw Labourers.
- Participates in crew briefings and communicates field updates.
- Assists with operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Supports wildfire response and fuel management activities.
(Reports to: Forestry Crew Lead)
- Works alongside senior staff to learn forestry and silviculture tasks.
- Participates in daily safety meetings and follows identified hazards and safe work practices.
- Uses and logs PPE, equipment, and fuel appropriately.
- Supports wildfire suppression tasks under direction.
- Performs duties as assigned while developing skill and independence..
Key Deliverables & Expectations (all roles)
>Health & Safety
- Participate in daily safety meetings and crew briefings.
- Comply with BC Forest Safety Council “SAFE Certification” requirements and complete all required documentation.
- Follow Occupational Health & Safety laws, WCB regulations, and LFV’s approved policies and standards.
- Support and maintain emergency response practices and proper use of PPE and first aid equipment.
- Enter Silviculture reports into the land management data
- Work with Lands and Resources collaboratively on field reviews
- Perform daily tasks such as operating chainsaws and brush saws, tree planting, spacing, brushing, pruning, and trail work.
- Support wildfire suppression tasks including fuel management, cutting trees, clearing debris, digging trenches, pumping water, and maintaining firefighting equipment.
- Operate and maintain LFV vehicles and equipment (ETVs, UTVs, chippers, tools) in accordance with safety requirements and local laws.
- Conduct vehicle inspections, refuel vehicles, and ensure crews have the equipment, gear, and fuel required for daily assignments.
- Communicate regularly with supervisors regarding project updates and field conditions.
- Complete or contribute to daily work progress reports and tailboard records.
- Participate as part of a field team ranging from 4–5 people depending on the assignment.
>Technical & Safety
- Firefighting training (S100, S185, ICS100, S212, S235, S232, S211) — required for senior roles; an asset for junior roles.
- Basic chainsaw training (required for senior roles; preferred for junior roles).
- Ability to work safely with hand and power tools.
- Ability to navigate off‑road terrain on foot and using off-road vehicles.
- Physically fit and able to lift, pull, or carry loads up to 50 lbs (junior role requirement).
- Ability to work flexible hours and travel as required.
- Forestry experience in silviculture, wildfire suppression, and/or harvesting (required for senior roles; entry-level acceptable for junior roles).
- Experience within a First Nations organization is preferred.
- Class 5 driver’s license — required for Crew Lead and Lead Hand; preferred but not required for Junior Saw Labourer.
- OFA Level 1 — required for senior roles; preferred for junior roles.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain confidentiality.
- Professional and respectful conduct with all stakeholders and community members.
