IT Support Engineer (Electronic Specialist)
Blessey Marine Services, Inc. owns and operates one of the youngest multi-faceted inland tank barge and vessel fleets in the United States.
We are in search of a IT Support Engineer (Electronic Specialist) for our Harahan, LA location.
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Handles day-to-day IT support to maintain and troubleshoot electronic, wiring, and computer systems primarily on Blessey Marine’s fleet of motor vessels, with additional support for shore-based IT infrastructure. This role focuses on electronic diagnostics, marine electronics, and wiring repairs, complemented by IT support for computers, networks, and devices.

Supervises: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

- Provide exceptional customer service to shore and vessel staff at Blessey Marine Services.
- Diagnose and repair two-wire electronic systems, coaxial, CATx (Ethernet), telephone, antenna, NMEA/Serial communications, and basic power distribution systems on vessels.
- Perform soldering, connector termination, and wiring installations for marine electronics and IT equipment.
- Maintain and troubleshoot navigational equipment (AIS, GPS Compass) and Rose Point systems on vessels.
- Conduct hands-on and remote technical support for electronic, wiring, and IT issues at offices and onboard vessels.
- Support network installation and maintenance, with a focus on wiring, cabling, and connectivity testing.
- Perform preventive maintenance and cleaning of electronic and IT equipment on shore and vessels.
- Troubleshoot and repair computers, printers, scanners, and multifunction devices as needed.
- Configure and support cellphone and cellular network device hardware, emphasizing wiring and connectivity.
- Document all support tasks in ConnectWise and internal tools.
- Manage lifecycle of electronic and IT equipment, including receiving, testing, inventorying, and configuring hardware.
- Liaise with vendors to manage equipment RMA/warranties, particularly for electronic and marine electronics.
- Assist in setting up training or demonstrations for electronic and IT systems.
- Participate in a scheduled “On-Call” after-hours rotation to support 24/7/365 operations.
- Travel up to 50% of scheduled work time to vessels and other locations as required.
- Perform other IT-related duties or project tasks as assigned, leveraging electronic and IT expertise.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Expert proficiency in two-wire electronic systems, wiring technologies, and electronic diagnostics in marine or industrial environments.
- Skilled in using multi-meters, wire tracing tools, Ethernet testing tools, and soldering equipment.
- Extensive experience troubleshooting and repairing coaxial, CATx (Ethernet), telephone, antenna, NMEA/Serial communications, and basic power distribution system.
- Proficient in Microsoft workstation operating systems and basic IT troubleshooting.
- High school diploma required; electronic certification or training (e.g., NMEA MEI/CMET) strongly preferred.
- Certification in one of the following is a plus: CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, or Microsoft.
- Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) required.
- 3-5 years of experience in electronic work, ideally with marine electronics, combined with IT support experience.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make informed decisions under pressure.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, with excellent interpersonal skills and initiative.
- Reliable and responsive to support calls during work hours, nights, and weekends.
- Ability to coordinate logistical movements of motor vessels to optimize efficiency and minimize downtime.
- Collaborative team player with the ability to teach others and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a Motor Vehicle History check.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires driving a vehicle as necessary to travel to vessels, running errands and to business related meetings. Extended out-of-town trips will be required on a regular basis. Employee and/or applicant must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History check and possess and maintain a current valid driver's license in their state of residence.
