The opportunity:

The energy manager will identify energy efficiency measures and opportunities for Cape Breton University (CBU) and help prepare the business case for approval. Reporting to both the Senior Energy Manager at EfficiencyOne and an organizational lead, the Energy Manager will provide technical support related to energy management at CBU Facilities in Sydney and work with third-party engineering firms and contractors to direct energy management activities within the organization. The Energy Manager will contribute to CBU’s Climate Action Plan, assist with the implementation of energy projects, and support business case development for projects and packages of projects for buildings. Specific responsibilities include: (Successful candidate must be willing to relocate to Cape Breton)

  • Collaborate with CBU staff to determine a reasonable and realistic annual energy savings target.
  • Support CBU’s Climate Action Commitment, which includes Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 53% of 2005 levels by 2030 and net zero by 2050
  • Review existing CBU infrastructure and proposed CBU capital developments and renovations to identify GHG reduction and energy conservation opportunities.
  • Identify and assist with securing EfficiencyOne, third-party, provincial, and federal climate change funding opportunities.
  • Monitor and analyze energy data from CBU energy analytics software and building automation system (BAS) to identify trends and patterns—report and benchmark energy performance against established targets. Identify opportunities to implement demand reduction.
  • Assist with developing CBU's climate action plan and comprehensive decarbonization plan as required.
  •  Led the LED replacement program by creating tender packages, conducting material takeoffs, reviewing existing lighting layouts, and managing lighting projects as required.
  •  Identify opportunities to implement energy-efficient products and develop new CBU policies as required.
  •  Review existing BAS schedules and identify opportunities to improve energy conservation and occupant comfort.
  • Develop and lead a BAS recommissioning program by applying for funding and collaborating with consultants and BAS providers as required.
  • Organize a strategy to prioritize and conduct energy audits of CBU's facilities and identify opportunities to align energy efficiency measures with CBU's capital and maintenance plans.
  • Continue the implementation of the energy efficiency measures identified in CBU’s Zero Carbon Plan.

What Will Help You Succeed?

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Designation as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP), and Project Management Professional (PMP) would be considered an asset.
  • Minimum of three years experience in an engineering role, one year in an energy-related role, with experience developing and implementing energy management programs and energy savings projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret electrical and mechanical plans and specifications for building facilities.
  • Proficient with all Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
  • The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal and time management skills and excellent written and oral communication skills.
  •  A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

What to expect in your first several weeks on the job:

In the first week, expect to:

  • Meet with the EfficiencyOne Energy Manager and Services team
  • Develop a high-level plan for the first 90 days in your role as an Energy Manager and
  • Be prepared to read! EfficiencyOne Energy Manager service manual, business program manuals, protocols on measurement and verification, energy auditing guidelines, example reports from Senior Energy Managers, and examples of other organizations' energy management plans. Ensuring you are familiar with technical resources and reference material is critical to executing your short-term plan on-site.

In the first month, expect to:

  • Become familiar with the people and organizations within the sector. Organizational awareness includes understanding the people who influence projects and are familiar with the facilities and processes, such as procurement, budget planning, etc.
  • Review ISO 50001 – Energy Management Systems and apply it to your present and future planning.
  • Meet with Efficiency NS Program Managers to get a better understanding of project incentives and program processes.
  • Meet with EfficiencyOne Senior Energy Managers to bounce ideas around on strategies and tactics that will increase your influence and positive impact on the account organization and
  • Meet with the consultant network to explore their services that could benefit your account.

In the first three months, expect to:

  • Establish monitoring, tracking, and reporting for your account. These are critical for Efficiency NS and for creating visibility within your accounts.
  • On-site energy audits – identify technologies and efficiency solutions.
  • Create business cases for projects with contractors, consultants, and account staff.
  • Build a master list of energy efficiency measures; and
  • Develop a framework for your account’s Energy Management Plan, which is a living document. This plan is a roadmap for your work as an energy manager and for organizations on their path toward corporate / government environmental and economic targets.
