SOMOS-CST is a family-owned small business in Colorado Springs specializing in fine grinding and polishing extremely delicate glass components for the medical, defense, optics, and green tech industries. We are seeking steady-handed, detail-oriented Machine Operators who are open to flexible scheduling. This role may include variable shifts and future overnights/weekends. The ideal candidate will take great pride in precision work and be able to successfully handle fragile materials throughout all stages of production.

Position Summary
The Machine Operator plays a key role in the manual processing of ultra-thin, delicate glass parts. This position emphasizes careful, precise, and methodical handling of materials to prevent damage and maintain exacting quality standards. The equipment used in this role is simple to learn and not difficult to use after full training is completed. A strong ability to learn, follow detailed procedures, and work carefully is more important than prior machine experience. Fine motor skills, patience, and dexterity are most essential for success in this role.
Key Responsibilities
Depending on your position, you may be required to perform the following operations. Full training is provided, and each task is straightforward and manageable, with no major difficulties.

Handle extremely fragile glass pieces with precision and care to minimize breakage

Produce parts according to manufacturing specifications and quality standards

Prepare materials for cutting, grinding, and polishing

Mount, dismount, and debond materials for machine operations

Operate diamond wire saws, lapping and polishing equipment

Measure, inspect, and document parts and processes
-
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace
-
Perform basic maintenance and quality checks on equipment

Other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent
Basic reading comprehension and math skills
Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity required

FLEXIBLE AVAILABILITY - 40 hrs/week, variable shifts including overnights and potential weekends

Ability to focus on repetitive, detail-oriented tasks

Self-motivated, team-focused, and reliable

Willingness to learn and adapt to specialized processes

Successful completion of a probationary training period
Transferable Skills
-
Backgrounds in food service, warehouse, assembly, optics, jewelry, electronics, laboratory, production, or other repetitive, hands-on work are welcome

Proficiency with hand tools, gauges, and mechanical aptitude is a plus

Familiarity with lean manufacturing or structured processes for quality and efficiency

Ability to follow precise written and verbal instructions
Physical Demands

Handle thin, delicate glass components with steady hands to minimize breakage

Stand for extended periods while performing repetitive, hands-on tasks

Perform tasks requiring fine motor control and sustained manual dexterity

Lift or move materials and supplies as needed (up to 10–20 lbs)

Inspect parts and measure components requiring good visual acuity
