Responsibilities 

 The custodian is responsible for a variety of tasks including washing, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, sweeping, moving furniture, and assembling. Maintains routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to ensure a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds for Westside Atlanta Charter School. This position reports to the assigned or designated supervisor.

Essential Duties

  • Conducts routine building inspections daily and identifies areas requiring follow-up action.

  • Informs Custodial Supervisor immediately with any issues

  • Performs clean-up tasks on surrounding grounds and structures

  • Cleans, shampoos, and/or disinfects carpets, in addition to restrooms in accordance with established procedures

  • Opens and secures building; sets security alarm (if applicable)

  • Receive and store school custodial supplies

  • Dusts and polishes furniture, window ledges, and all horizontal surfaces

  • Assist in setting up facilities for special events

  • Move materials, equipment, and furniture as necessary

  • Assemble equipment and furniture as necessary

  • Ensures floors are cleaned, mopped, stripped, and waxed as necessary

  • Maintains equipment to ensure proper working condition, cleanliness and stores equipment

  • Collects, cleans, and empties trash cans 

  • Stock restrooms with paper and soap and changes light bulbs and ceiling tiles

  • Washes windows on lower levels and on doors, both inside and outside

  • Operate autoscrubbers, buffers, and vacuums and help keep equipment in working condition

  • Assist custodial supervisor in the performance of basic building maintenance

Ability to:

  • Work a variety of schedules on a weekday day and evening shifts, and occasional weekend shifts.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both in writing and orally.

  • Exercise sound independent judgment within general policy guidelines.

  • Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive and complex issues and situations.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, administrators, teachers, staff, vendors, contractors and others encountered in the course of work.

  • Be a self-motivated team player with the ability to work independently, influence and collaborate with diverse constituencies.

  • Multi-task, work under pressure and solve problems.

  • Organize and prioritize workload effectively to meet scheduled deadlines.

  • Sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend and walk for extended periods of time.

  • Lift and carry loads up to 50 pounds; push and pull tools and equipment weighing up to 250 pounds.

  • Work in environments that may include exposure to fumes and dirt, noise from equipment operation, some exposure to janitorial chemicals, without allergic reaction.

  • Operate a variety of powered and manual equipment commonly found in janitorial and custodial services in a safe and effective manner

  • Work in an indoor and outdoor environment.

  • Work in restricted spaces in a safe and effective manner

  • Work at various elevated heights in a safe and effective manner

Minimum Requirements

Education/Work Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent

License or Certificates:

Must possess a valid driver’s license
