Summary of Duties:
The Concrete Placer and Finisher will be responsible for placing, finishing, and repairing concrete surfaces for various construction projects, including but limited to foundations, floors, sidewalks, and driveways, under the supervision of the Concrete Supervisor.
Labourer - Key Deliverables and Expectations:
• Reporting to the Supervisor or Manager they have been scheduled to work with
• Obtaining the necessary tools
• Working diligently, following instructions, and anticipating and filling crew needs
• Completing daily paperwork
• Ensuring customer satisfaction by displaying a courteous, friendly manner
• Ensuring on-site quality control
• Always maintain personal safety gear (hard hat, hi-vis vest, steel-toed boots, ear protection, eye protection, gloves, respirator or mask)
• Task-specific personal protective equipment (PPE) to be worn as needed
• Perform work in accordance with all organizational, as well as provincial and federal health and safety standards and legislation, ensuring the highest standard of safety is upheld
• Demonstrate Personal Protective Equipment standards by attending morning meetings in hard hat, high-vis safety vest, steel-toed boots, eye protection, gloves
• Always maintain foul weather gear at all times (rain gear, rubber boots)
• Load and unload construction materials, and move materials to work areas
• Set and prepare formwork for concrete pouring, ensuring proper alignment and grade.
• Place and spread concrete into forms using tools such as shovels, rakes, and screeds.
• Operate power vibrators to compact concrete and remove air pockets.
• Assist pump operator to place concrete.
• Level and smooth concrete surfaces using hand and power tools to achieve desired finish.
• Install fixtures such as anchor bolts, steel plates, and door sills as per blueprints and specifications.
• Apply curing compounds, sealers, and waterproofing agents to concrete surfaces.
• Repair, resurface, and replace damaged or worn concrete sections.
• Erect and dismantle concrete forms, scaffolding, ramps, catwalks, shoring, and barricades required at construction sites
• Mix, pour, and spread materials for concrete
• Assist tradespersons such as carpenters in construction activities
• Assist heavy equipment operators to secure special attachments to equipment, signal operators to guide them in moving equipment and aid in other activities
• Level earth to fine-grade specifications using rake and shovel
• Assist in demolishing formwork using prying bars and other tools, and sort, clean and pile salvaged materials
• Remove rubble and other debris at construction sites using rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows and other equipment
• Operate pneumatic hammers, vibrators, and tampers or task specific equipment as directed
• Tend or feed machines or equipment used in construction such as mixers, compressors, and pumps
• Clean up chemical spills and other contaminants, and other hazardous materials
• Oil and grease hoists, and similar equipment
• Direct traffic at or near construction sites
• Arriving at the scheduled assembly point on time and ready for work
• Perform other related duties as requested.
Experience and Attributes:
• 2–5 years of experience in concrete placement and finishing preferred
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
• Proficiency in using hand and power tools related to concrete work.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, shares critical information, regular updates to staff, provides ongoing feedback and input, asks questions to understand the situation, uses email for follow-up and information sharing
• Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and projects at one time, can properly identify priorities.
• Strong time management skills; arrive at job sites on time, follow communication policies when changes in scheduling are required, and work efficiently to complete jobs per the timeline provided.
• Stays calm under pressure, in stressful or emergency situations
• Builds strong working relationships with team members
• High standard of professionalism both with clients and co-workers
• Physically fit and mobile, able to lift up to 75 lbs and be on feet all day, able to conduct manual labour, can work outside in variable conditions.
• First Aid Level 1/Basic preferred
• Fall Protection Training preferred
• Rigging Training preferred
• Ability to work flexible hours weekends and holidays if needed.
• Ability to travel as required for the position
• Class 5 Driver’s License an asset, a clear driver’s abstract is required for drivers
