HSB Maintenance Technician


MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN                                                                       


The Maintenance Technician position at Historic Ships in Baltimore reports to the Maintenance and Preservation Manager.  The Maintenance Technician will be assigned to maintenance tasks on board USS Constellation, USS Torsk, USCG Cutter WHEC-37, Lightship 116 Chesapeake and at the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse.  The Maintenance Technician will also, at times, be engaged as an instructor working with volunteers, interns, and apprentices at these sites.


         Wood preservation work – prep and painting.

         Steel preservation work – prep and painting

         Woodworking and carpentry projects assigned per skill level.

         Steel repair and preservation projects assigned per skill level.

         Tool care and maintenance

         Daily checks of ship and ship systems condition.

         General maintenance tasks as assigned including cleaning and “housekeeping”.

         Supervision of maintenance and preservation volunteers, interns and apprentices as assigned.

         Positive interaction with museum visitors, explaining projects and processes. 

         Assisting the HSB Team with special events as assigned.

         Such other duties as assigned by the Maintenance and Preservation Manager.


·       Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire to be considered.  Proof of vaccination will be required.

·       Must be willing to submit to pre-employment drug testing and background check, with negative results.

·       Regular work week is Tuesday through Saturday to facilitate working with volunteers.

·       Highschool Diploma or demonstrated equivalent work/life experience.

·       2 years of experience in the maritime maintenance field.  Electrical and plumbing/mechanical systems knowledge is helpful. 

·       Excellent communications and organizational skills with an emphasis on attention to detail.

·       Ability to be on-call as needed.  Some weekend, evening and Holiday work is expected.

·       Computer literacy is a plus with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook, and be willing and able to learn and use other technologies as necessary.

·       Ability to interact in a professional manner with program participants, staff, donors, Advisory Board, volunteers, and all others.                                                                                                                                                                                 

·       Ability to function as an effective member of the Living Classrooms / Historic Ships in Baltimore team working cohesively to produce quality results.


·       Job requires bending, lifting, climbing and physical activity in all weather conditions and in tight spaces.

·       Job requires an ability to maintain high levels of visual and mental concentration for extended periods of time.

·       This position requires positive interaction with the public.

·       Must be able to access boats, gangways, ladders, floats, and bilges, and work aloft.

·       Must be able to do all manner of physical activities including working outdoors in all types of weather conditions. 

·       Must be physically capable of moving through the ships and performing all tasks associated with emergency procedures. 

·       Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs.
