Living Classrooms Foundation strengthens communities and inspires young people to achieve their potential through hands-on education and job training, using urban, natural, and maritime resources as “living classrooms.” Living Classrooms serves over 25,000 youth and young adults annual with programming in the Washington, DC and Baltimore areas. The National Capital Region Development Associate is an integral member of the Development team and will work to raise funds to meet the annual operating and capital fundraising goals for National Capital Region programs. He/she reports directly to the Vice President of Development and Communications and works closely with members of the organization’s Development team, the Managing Director of National Capital Region, and National Capital Region Program Directors.

Core Responsibilities

·       Primary focus on raising funds to sustain our programs – Research, identify, prospect, and secure new funding sources in the Washington, DC area including:

o   Corporate solicitations- local and national

o   Individual solicitations- local and national

o   Foundation solicitations- local and national

o   Local and federal government

·         Talks regularly with program staff to deeply understand existing programs and help to “sell” programs

·         Writes high-quality, compelling, and successful letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and grant reports using existing and new language.

·         Participates as directed in capital and other special funding campaigns.

·         Develops and implements strategies to meet with potential donors and sponsors with special attention to businesses and residents in Living Classrooms service areas.

·         Builds relationships with area businesses and residents to garner support for Living Classrooms’ programs.

·         Helps to develop and organize program tours and fundraising events.

o   Secure sponsorships, media, restaurants

o   Secure in-kind donations

o   Helps with logistics around events

·         Maintains meticulous records and reports on research, contacts, and outcomes.

·         Assists with communication as needed to the public, traditional media, and social media.

·         Assists with copywriting and editing other development team materials as necessary.

·         Appropriately represent the organization to donors and prospects at various events

·         Seek and actively participate in networking opportunities in and around the District

 

Required Education, Skills and Abilities

·         College degree in marketing, communications, business, or a related discipline preferred

·         Two to five years of professional development experience involving persuasive writing, with demonstrable success in crafting exceptional written documents

·         Ability to work naturally within a team environment and with minimal supervision

·         Ability to synthesize complex information and draft new and compelling text

·         Highly organized with an ability to manage the details of multiple projects simultaneously

·         Ability to consistently meet tight deadlines

·         High standard of honesty and a deep commitment to Living Classrooms’ work

·         Facility with the Microsoft suite of tools, especially Excel

·         Experience with Canva or other simple design software

 

Additional Information

Living Classrooms principal DC office is located at 515 M Street SE, Suite 223.  While work can be performed mostly offsite until conditions change, he or she must be able to get to and work from this location in a reliable manner. Some evening work is required for networking and fundraising events.
