Childcare Worker - SESISEJ

Saanichton, BC Part-time $22.05-$23.39/hour
Join Beacon Community Services as a Childcare Worker in our after-school program at SESISEJ in Saanichton. The SESISEJ Childcare Centre practices "the WSANEC ways of knowing and being" and will assist children in establishing a sense of community, place and belonging while supporting their growth and learning needs. Days/Hours of Work: Monday – Friday 2:30 pm – 7:30 pm (30 Hours per week) SESISEJ after-school care follows the school calendar from September to June and is closed on non-instructional days.

POSITION SUMMARY: 
Reporting to the Childcare Manager the Child Care Worker joins a caring and compassionate team dedicated to providing engaging and safe programs to the children and families in their community. The Child Care Worker is responsible for assisting the program as required, and for implementing creative, engaging and meaningful crafts and activities for children ages 5 to 12 years old during the After School Care Program, while upholding the philosophies of Beacon Community Services. 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Implement inclusive and developmentally age-appropriate activities while considering the unique mental, physical, and emotional needs of the children 
  • Operate the Beacon Bus to pick up children from their school and bring them SESISEJ 
  • Actively engage in respectful communication and supervision of the children registered in the program by fostering a safe and nurturing learning environment 
  • Maintain daily attendance logs of the children, noting any changes in attendance communicated by parents to the Childcare Manager 
  • Maintain open and respectful communication with parents regarding their child’s behaviour and engagement in the program, referring any concerns to the Childcare Manager 
  • Prepare and provide nutritionally valuable foods for the children following Food Safe standards and guidelines  
  • Attend and actively participate in monthly staff meetings focused on program planning and development, offering feedback and suggestions to better promote the overall success of the program  
  • Maintain a positive and flexible working relationship with other members of staff 
  • Acknowledge and uphold the Beacon Community Services philosophies and policies, while also being aware of families' philosophies, to provide an inclusive, accepting and culturally aware program 
  • Value maintaining a clean, organized and visually attractive workspace 
  • Be aware of and strive to maintain the policies and procedures created and implemented by Beacon Community Services  
  • Adhere to BC Child Care Regulations  
  • Report any concerns to the Facility Site Supervisor 
QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • The successful Child Care Workers applicants are required to meet the Licensing Standards of a Responsible Adult as follows: 
    • Must be 19+ years of age  
    • Valid Food Safe Certificate (or completion of upon successful hire)
    • Experience working with children in an Out of School Care program is an asset  
    • Must have a valid First Aid Certificate 
    • Must have 3 positive references 
    • Must have completed 20 hours of childcare education or courses
  • Unrestricted class 4 driver's license and clean driver abstract is considered an asset

  • Able to provide a warm, caring and nurturing learning environment for children 
  • Able to be flexible and proactive, adapting quickly to the changing needs of the program and the children attending 
  • Able to be an active member of a team focused on creating community and respect within the workplace  
  • Strong proactive problem-solving and multi-tasking skills with the intent of providing care that results in the overall safety and well-being of the children  
  • Strong Communication Skills, both written and verbal  
  • Skilled at creating respectful workplace relationships.

  • All successful applicants must consent to a Solicitor General’s Criminal Record Check. 
  • All successful applicants are required to disclose their COVID-19 vaccination status upon hire. Vaccination is a requirement in some of our facilities. Depending on future public health developments, Beacon may implement a vaccination requirement as a condition of ongoing employment for all our workplaces.
