Who We Are:

Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre (SOFMC) is Victoria’s premier entertainment facility and the largest arena in British Columbia outside Vancouver. The state-of-the-art 7,000 seat facility is home to the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League and regularly hosts large-scale concerts and other special events such as figure skating, curling, trade shows and conferences. The arena was developed and is operated by GSL Group, a Vancouver-based development and entertainment company with sports and entertainment facilities throughout BC and the current owner of Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League.

We are looking for a full-time Director of Facility Operations who will be responsible for the daily activities required to run, maintain, and service Save On Foods Memorial Centre to function as the premier sports and entertainment venue in Victoria BC. 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee overall daily operations of the facility
  • Direct and manage facility and event conversions for sporting games/tournaments, concerts, conferences, and other special events as required to ensure event setups are safe, correct, and completed on-time and within budget 
  • Manage facility operations & maintenance budget, providing regular reporting, backup, projections, and event specific reconciliations as required
  • Directs, supervises, and schedules all aspects of facility operations including operations staff, engineering; building and grounds; technical services; including accessibility compliance; public safety; security; custodial services, parking departments, etc.
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, motivating, and managing the operations & conversion team members
  • Oversee maintenance and preventative maintenance of all venue systems including but not limited to mechanical, plumbing, electrical, ice plant, structural, HVAC, etc.
  • Establish and maintain a working standard operating procedure for staff and all aspects of the building operations
  • Order supplies and materials for operations departments within budget guidelines, receive, inventory, and maintain supplies
  • Investigate, analyze, and resolve operational problems, complaints, and emergency repairs in a timely and efficient manner 
  • Oversee facility operations staff scheduling & hours tracking to maintain a lean and efficient operation
  • Ensure a safe working environment for all employees, including the development of a comprehensive workplace safety program, following all Technical Safety BC & Worksafe BC safety regulations
  • Establish and maintain high standards of customer service for staff, customers, and vendors
  • Identify and maximize revenue drivers while optimizing the overall guest and client experience
  • Establish and manage venue sustainability program
  • Manage community relationships with the City of Victoria, Victoria PD, Interior Health, Technical Safety BC, and Worksafe BC
  • Day to day management & procurement, including RFQ preparation with a three-quote process, of all facility operations vendors/subcontractors including but not limited to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, cleaning, security, waste/recycling, etc.
  • Coordinate the operations activities with other building departments and show-related contractors to assure facility readiness and smooth operation of events
  • Set, implement, and update facility rules, regulation policies and procedures
  • Anticipate problems and find appropriate and cost-effective solutions. Investigate, analyze, and resolve operational problems and complaints
  • Conduct periodic staff meetings to discuss procedures, problems, and policy changes
  • Provide clear, concise, and timely communication of directives to other departments
  • Maintain all safety records and ensure all personnel working in the venue wear appropriate safety gear and follow provincial legislations
  • Schedule any provincial/local certifications or permits required including but not limited to elevators, escalators, refrigeration plants, back flow preventers, host inspections, lifeline inspections, fire suppression equipment, etc.
  • Ensure the venue and anyone operating within it always meet building and fire code protocols per provincial legislation
  • Act as a primary contact for the venue to support relationships with various organizations that utilize the facility
  • On site for ticketed events at the facility, with pre-approved exceptions, serving as Manager on Duty for all WHL games and some special events (special events MOD responsibilities to be split with Director of Production determined in coordination with executive team)
  • Other duties and responsibilities as reasonably assigned by executive team

Ideal Candidate:

  • Bachelors degree in business administration, facility management or related sports & entertainment field preferred
  • Minimum of eight (8) years experience in facility operations supervision or with comparable increasing responsibility in an arena or stadium facility
  • Knowledge of facility operations budget preparation and control
  • Experience in arena or stadium event production, setup, and conversions; to include but not limited to hockey, concerts, family shows, sporting tournaments, conferences, etc. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of supervisory skills and principles, with experience in work crew supervision, including unions, and working on a varied work schedule in facility operations 
  • Knowledge of Technical Safety BC and Worksafe BC or OSHA current policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of Fire Alarm / Fire Protection systems
  • Possess valid driver’s license or have the ability to acquire
  • Possess Power Engineer with RO certification 
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, google suite, and other applications. Familiarity with MS Teams and Asana project management software preferred
  • Solutions-oriented with the ability to anticipate problems and implement immediate corrective action 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be comfortable multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced environment 
  • Highly organized with excellent project management skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines and work effectively in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to work flexible and extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, in addition to normal business hours

Compensation: Aligned with industry standards, to be negotiated based on experience
