Civil and Mine Engineering Co-op Student Positions

We are currently looking for Civil and Mine Engineering Co-op students to join our team for 4, 6, & 8-month term starting in May 2019.

Co-op students at Terracon may be exposed to a variety of different tasks and responsibilities. Students will gain field experience in soils engineering, drill monitoring and construction monitoring, QA/QC monitoring techniques, site investigations, foundation inspections, and general soils testing. Students will work on oil sand sites or in the laboratory. The work environment includes an open pit mine which requires close attention to safety and excellent verbal communication skills.

Terracon Co-op Students take ownership over project execution and financial performance.  This includes the prudent monitoring and evaluation of project milestones and costs.  They must develop a rapport with new and existing clients by effectively communicating the superior service and results that our teams provide.

These roles will report to an Operations Manager, as well as, the assigned Project Manager. These opportunities are based in Fort McMurray Alberta and will require relocation for the duration of the co-op assignment. Company housing is not provided. The work schedule is a rotational schedule of shift work; days, nights, weekends and holidays will be included.


  • Soils engineering and soils testing
  • Earthwork and concrete testing
  • Performing quality control testing
  • Monitoring, documenting and verifying that the earthworks construction meets design specifications
  • Provide client representatives with field testing results, and monitor sub-contractor adherence to design specifications
  • Construction monitoring and reporting on the installation of construction
  • Piling inspections


  • Currently enrolled or recently graduated in a Civil Engineering or Geosciences degree program
  • 0-3 years of experience in a technical field-base role
  • Oil Sands industry experience an asset
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Flexible and strong team player skills
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills
  • Excellent verbal and communications skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong ability to update documentation and maintain information
  • Dedication and attention to safety standards and client site rules and regulations
  • Ability to drive a 4x4 off road
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • BSO or CSO, H2S Alive, & Wildlife Awareness certifications are considered an asset
  • Preference will be given to those who have a student membership with ASET or APEGA
  • This is a safety sensitive position

Working Conditions

  • Field Environment; operations take place in the vicinity of tailings dikes, soils waste dumps and hauls roads
  • Lab Environment; operations take place indoors with regular noise exposure
  • Driving on mine roads
  • Operating an all-terrain vehicle
  • Working outdoors in extreme temperatures and conditions
  • Up to a maximum of 50lbs of the heavy lifting is required
  • Rotational schedule including days and night shifts.
  • Schedule may require being on-call
  • Schedule may involve 12-hour shifts
