JOB SUMMARY:  The Youth Specialist works most closely with the residents of Ruth’s House and is responsible for the daily life and building the daily living skills of the youth.  They serve as a role model offering support to the youth, engaging, teaching and guiding in a manner similar to a parent.  This person monitor’s youth behavior, and at all times encourages positive/pro-social behaviors and reports any issue.  The Youth Specialist is responsible for maintaining a clean, functional household and supports other Ruth’s House team members whenever possible and appropriate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

1.      While working alongside youth, builds and/or improves youth’s daily living skills, including but not limited to cooking, cleaning, basic money management, and self-management while in the community.

2.      Transports youth to school and other appointments, as indicated by the Residential Supervisor.

3.      Engages, supervises, and encourages positive social behavior inside and outside of the house.

4.      Transports and assists youth shopping for personal items and household goods while teaching common sense behaviors during such engagements. Completes this responsibility in line with program policies and in accordance with the regulations of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

5.      Applies clinical interventions recommended by primary care and/or behavioral health professionals and report on the results of such interventions on an at least a daily basis via a communication log, the incident report form, and in conversation with the Residential Supervisor.

6.      Applies Handle with Care and CPR as necessary and indicated by the situation.

7.      Applies behavioral interventions as indicated through instruction from the residents’ community treatment providers and the REC clinical staff.

8.      Maintains, by talking with other staff and reviewing the communication log at the start of each shift, up-to-date information on all residents.

9.      Supervises on- and off-site family visits.

10.  Responds to on-call rotation and contingency requests from the Residential Supervisor.

11.  Assists the Residential Supervisor as requested.

12.  REPORTING REQUIRMENTS (monthly per youth):

a.       Completes the communications logs per agency policy and DHHS regulations.

b.      Reviews the online youth calendar at the beginning of each shift.

c.       Completes incident reports per agency policy and DHHS regulations.

d.      Confirms the completion of chore and correctly enters payment for such for each youth in the chore allowance log as soon as the youth has completed the task; can assign additional household tasks as needed and enter these as well.

e.       Enters information on the agency van use, maintenance, fueling, and repair per agency policy.

f.       Completes the medical administration record log, which tracks primary care as well as behavioral health interventions as ordered by external treatment providers and per agency policy.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This position has no supervisory responsibility.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This job operates a residential setting, and in a variety of professional and community environments including but not limited to office environments, community and partner agencies, and youth spaces. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers; phone; photocopiers; filing cabinets; and fax machines. The noise level in the work environment and job sites may be loud.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and/or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; climb ladders; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to ten pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to twenty-five pounds.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

This is a is either part time or full-time position, generally reporting days vary, shifts are either 7:00AM-3:00PM, 3:00PM-11:00PM, or 11:00PM-7:00AM each day of the week.

TRAVEL:

This position requires local travel to complete errands and duties as assigned. The employee must have a valid driver license.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPIERNECE:

1.      High school diploma or equivalent and at least one (1) year of experience working in a residential/group treatment facility.

2.      Demonstrate knowledge of the unique needs of LGBTQ youth or children in foster care.

3.      Flexible schedule and willingness to work within a shift-based schedule as well as the ability to be on call for a week once per month.

PREFERED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

1. A bachelor’s degree in a human service field.

ADDITIONAL ELGIBILITY QUALIFICATION:

None required for this positon.

WORK AUTHORIZATION / SECURITY CLEARANCE:

  1. Must be able to pass a criminal background check as outlined by agency policy.
  2. Have no record on the Central Registry for child abuse or neglect in the employee’s state of residency or employment.
  3. Be able to produce a non-reactive tuberculosis test from within the previous twelve (12) months.
