Case Manager
CMHA Kelowna is hiring a full-time Case Manager. This position offers 37.5 hours a week with a typical work week of Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm.
WHO IS A CASE MANAGER?
The Case Manager (CM) in the Rent Bank program assists citizens of the Central Okanagan who are unhoused, or at significant risk of losing their housing, by processing client referrals and intakes. The CM provides clients with advice and supplementary supports geared towards helping individuals stay in their current housing or obtaining new housing.
WHAT DOES A CASE MANAGER DO?
- Act as the main point of contact for referral enquiries and submissions
- Receive referrals, processing intake and application forms such as bank statements and leases
- Connect clients experiencing, or at significant risk of, being unhoused to services and community resources including social assistance, budgeting, and food security programs
- Provides case management, advocacy and access to information and other services
- Conducts assessments with clients to determine the appropriate service and whether they are eligible for a loan or rent supplement
- Considers other supports or services that may benefit a client in addition to, or in lieu of financial assistance, and refers clients to those services
- Explains loan terms and conditions to clients and manages loan agreement signing with clients
- Prepares recommendations to the Manager in cases where the client meets the criteria for a loan
- Assists with applications and reviews loan applications, verifies information submitted including supporting documentation
- Liaises with appropriate Finance team members to set up loan repayments
- Maintains contact with clients over the period of loan repayments to manage issues arising during loan repayment and to ensure successful repayment of the loan in full
- Attends weekly case review and team meetings with the Community Roots team and Manager
- Actively participates, as the representative of the Central Okanagan Rent Bank, in the network of BC rent banks as facilitated by BC Rent Bank
- Attends relevant meetings and conferences with a direct focus on housing issues
- Provides an ethical, efficient and therapeutic approach to dealing with crisis intervention in a timely manner
- Navigates conversation around self-harm applying an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) lens
- Maintains program financial and repayment tracking through Case Management System (CMS) and internal spreadsheets
- Maintains program statistics and reports, working collaboratively with other team members to ensure the success of the program
- Provides regular updates to CMHA Kelowna management of program statistics and key learnings
- Provides information for reporting to the Manager as needed
- Performs other related duties as assigned
YOUR STRENGTHS & EXPERIENCE:
- Diploma in Social Services or related field
- Minimum 2 years relevant experience if no related education
- Criminal Record Check clearance in the Vulnerable Sector
- Certificates in First Aid, CPR and Naloxone considered an asset
- Ability to engage respectfully with individuals with multiple barriers
- Communication and customer service skills to effectively support clients
- Ability to work in cooperation with team members and independently
- Understanding of and commitment to working with people experiencing or being at risk of being unhoused
- Knowledge of social service systems and local resources related to housing, social and financial services is an asset
- Ability to maintain consistent professional boundaries, exercising mature judgment and understanding of safety concerns
- Understanding of basic financial concepts and tools such as household budgets, comparing income vs expenses, credit, debt, interest and loans
- Familiarity with willingness to learn and understand basic loan contract terms and conditions
- Ability to explain the rent bank loan and loan agreements in simple, easy-to-understand terms to clients
- Understanding of Harm Reduction theory and demonstrated ability to implement harm reduction strategies
- Understanding of Intentional Outreach, Housing First, Rapid Re-Housing, and Shelter Diversion principles
- Understanding of working with a Trauma Informed lens
- Familiar with or ability to learn Housing Connections
- Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
- Strong attention to detail
- Critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills
- Ability to complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner, utilizing good organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple cases efficiently and effectively
- Ability to be regularly exposed to individuals who are struggling with and/or recovering from trauma, drug/alcohol use, homelessness, mental health challenges and/or mental illness
