ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:

This employment opportunity is funded by The Government of Canada Immunization Partnership Fund. The funding is to support community-driven initiatives that help to close the gap among populations with lower vaccine uptake. The RN/LPN will engage with community members through workshops, teaching sessions and appropriate Indigenous practices to increase acceptance and uptake of age appropriate immunization. 

This unique position is idea for nurses with an interest in management and leadership. The ideal candidate is someone who can juggle the medical duties as well as administrative responsibilities. Training and support will be provided to the successful candidate. Applicants should be comfortable working alone and have well developed problem solving skills. Being able to adapt to change is critical for this position. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitates Community outreach interventions such as preparing educational material that is ideal for target audience (fact sheets re risk or benefits and information on immunization and facilitating in person workshops and culturally safe strategies such as sharing circles); group home/shelter visits, determine incentives for participants to increase acceptance and uptake of age-appropriate immunization.
  • Builds rapport with community members to identify barriers and put interventions in place to mitigate these barriers using critical thinking skills.
  • Assesses client’s previous immunization history through eChart.
  • Screens for contraindications to vaccine and obtains informed consent as per established policies and procedures.
  • Administers the required vaccine in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Provide predetermined immunizations to children and adults in clinics or community settings such as pop-up clinics.
  • Counsel clients with regard to ‘after care” and possible adverse events.
  • Completes required documentation including data collection.
  • Observes for and assists coordinator in the management of fainting, anaphylaxis, or other immediate reactions.
  • Maintains vaccine cold chain and appropriate disposal of sharps.
  • Creating client care plans in response to unforeseen events and changing client needs within the scope of practice and competency guidelines.
  • Working with the management and inter-professional teams (Public Health Physician) to tackle complex issues.
  • Providing routine information regarding resources available in the community. These resources may include symptom information and infection control practices to prevent transmission and reduce the spread of the virus.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

EXPERIENCE

  • Up to 5 years of related experience

EDUCATION (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) and some related experience with immunization and community settings. 
  • The successful candidate will be required to complete the Education Program for Immunization Competencies (EPIC) at the cost of the employer: https://cps.ca/en/epic 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Emergency First Aid and CPR Level C or willingness to obtain
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector search, a Clear Child and Adult Abuse Registry Checks with acceptable Prior Contact Check all completed within the last 3 months
  • Valid driver's license and use of a personal vehicle is a requirement for this position 
  • Valid driver's abstract


Position Status - Part-time Term - up to 20 hours per week, varied availability is required including evenings and weekends as needed. Shifts include: Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm or from 12pm to 7pm. This is a two year term with a potential for extension based on funding.
