Seasonal Summer Camp Supervisor

Reports to:  Visual Arts and Education Coordinator

Direct Reports:  Summer Camp Assistants

Position Overview

The Summer Camp Supervisor will work with a team of 5-6 Summer Camp Assistants to oversee the day-to-day operations of the ArtsQuest Summer Arts Camp program by creating a daily staff schedule and ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all campers. In addition to camp, the Camp Supervisor will manage the preparation and development of projects and community workshops at the Familienplatz Children’s Craft Tent at Musikfest. The Supervisor will assist professional, experienced Teaching Artists with administering lesson plans and curriculum. Classes include ceramics, photography, painting, drawing, crafts, mixed media, glass, etc.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the work of the Summer Camp Assistants and lead assistants through daily and long term projects.
  • Assist with check-in and check-out of campers each day.
  • Create and maintain a daily schedule of summer staff teaching assistants and breaks.
  • Hold weekly check-in meetings with the camp assistants and attend a weekly check-in meeting with the Visual Arts and Education Coordinator.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians in person, through e-mails and phone calls, and report concerns to Visual Arts Coordinator.
  • Send weekly camp check-in emails to parents and to Summer Camp Assistants
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including special accommodations and incident reports
  • Assist teaching artists with students in both camp and classes.
  • Assist with procuring supplies, prep, and clean-up of materials. Additionally, the Summer Camp Supervisor will inventory camp supplies regularly and inform the Visual Arts Coordinator of any items that are needed including first aid, general art supplies, games and activities, and other supplies and equipment used throughout the classrooms.
  • Communicate with teaching artists, summer staff and families regarding Friday Art Parties.
  • Work with Summer Staff to install and present student projects for Friday Art Parties.
  • Assist with before and after-camp care programs.
  • Supervise the preparation of materials for craft projects and community projects offered during summer festivals and Musikfest.
  • Staff summer festival and Musikfest craft areas.
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the Summer Camp and all program areas.
  • Responsible for other duties as deemed appropriate and assigned by members of the Visual Arts and Education department.

Duration of position: June 3, 2019, through August 23, 2019.

Hours of Work:

During Summer Camps:  Supervisors will work a 36—40 hour week, Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Camps run June 10 – July 26 and August 12 – August 23.

During Musikfest (August 2-11): The Summer Camp Supervisor will work split shifts from 11 am to 9:30 pm for all 10 days of the festival.

The Summer Camp Supervisor needs to be available and able to work during the hours outlined above. Occasional evenings, weekends and holidays may be required for other children’s activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree preferred in early childhood education, fine art, art history or equivalent work experience; High School Diploma Required.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • Previous experience working with children is desired.
  • Must enjoy working with children and the arts.
  • Knowledge of visual arts desired.
  • Patience and a great sense of humor are helpful.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and creativity are desired.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills; ability to interact with children, adults, parents, and team of camp assistants.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel frequently required.
  • Ability to see, hear, speak, listen frequently required.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work indoors in the air conditioning and outdoors in all types of weather conditions when necessary.
  • The ability and desire to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English; bi-lingual ability in Spanish or other language is a plus.
  • Criminal History and PA Child Abuse Clearances required.
  • Reliable transportation to travel between facilities as needed.

  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 25 pounds occasionally with or without assistance or reasonable accommodation.
