Position Summary:
The Senior Property Accountant is responsible for leading the full-cycle accounting and financial reporting process for a complex portfolio of properties. This position provides oversight, mentorship to junior accounting staff, and strategic support to Property Management in financial planning and analysis. The role ensures timely and accurate reporting, regulatory compliance, and supports continuous improvement in financial operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage all accounting, reporting, and analysis functions for a portfolio of properties, including A/P, A/R, G/L, bank reconciliations, and financial packages.
- Lead the monthly close process, ensuring deadlines are met and entries are complete and accurate.
- Review, prepare, and approve complex journal entries and adjusting entries.
- Prepare and analyze monthly and quarterly financial statements, including balance sheets, P&L statements, and supporting schedules.
- Identify and explain variances from budget/forecast and provide commentary to management.
- Reconcile all balance sheet and bank accounts monthly.
- Coordinate with Property Management to ensure financial reports accurately reflect property operations.
- Oversee escrow, reserve, and capital account reconciliations.
- Assist with budget creation and forecasting, providing detailed support and review for assigned properties.
- Review and monitor A/P and A/R processes to ensure compliance, timely processing, and identify issues proactively.
- Process and review capital expenditure requests and funding.
- Lead initiatives to improve accounting processes, increase efficiency, and ensure internal controls are in place.
- Serve as a resource and mentor to other Property Accountants, providing training, support, and review of work as needed.
- Ensure adherence to company policies, GAAP standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Assist with year-end audits and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required
- 3+ years of property accounting experience.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, complex formulas).
- Demonstrated ability to manage a complex property portfolio with minimal supervision.
- Hands-on experience with Yardi is strongly preferred.
- Solid understanding of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to interact professionally with team members, management, and ownership groups.
