Tanganyika Docent Program

Are you passionate about wildlife conservation and dedicated to creating WOW moments that inspire stewardship of animals? Tanganyika’s Docent Program is a year-round volunteer opportunity for teens and adults offering a flexible way to get involved at the Park. Docents can participate in various activities, including Animal Encounter Stations, Animal Care (for those 18 and older), office projects, and animal handling. Volunteers can request activities and programs that align with their interests and schedules, making it an ideal option for busy students and professionals.

We are looking for individuals with the following qualities:

  • Good communication skills are a plus, but many volunteer paths don’t involve public speaking.
  • Positive, self-motivated, and open-minded
  • Flexible with the ability to adapt to changing situations
  • Reflective and able to take constructive feedback
  • Team player who enjoys working collaboratively

What do I need to know about the docent program?

  • No prior animal knowledge is required, but for some activities, it is preferred.
  • Docents must make a minimum commitment of 40 hours per year.
  • Complete an interview and, if selected, go through the orientation.
  • There is a fee of $25 when you begin.

What are the rewards of becoming a docent?

  • Connect with the Park on a deeper level while sharing your enthusiasm.
  • Enjoy personal growth as you learn new skills and knowledge.
  • Make new friends among fellow volunteers and staff.
  • Give back to the community.

We do have some program requirements. By completing the application, you agree to the following.

  • You will offer your services as a volunteer without expecting monetary compensation.
  • You are at least 14 years of age.
  • Follow all TWP policies and protocols.
  • Attend all required trainings and meetings.
    • If you cannot attend, you will communicate with the volunteer coordinator promptly before the meeting or training is to take place.
  • You will find transportation to and from TWP.
