Port Captain
We are in search of a Port Captain for our Channelview, TX office.
JOB TITLE: Port Captain
DEPARTMENT: Operations
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Coordinates vessel procedures including normal operation and works with other office departments by performing the following duties:
SUPERVISION:
Reports to: General Manager of Marine Operations
Supervises: Vessel Personnel
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
· Oversee daily operations including traffic information and product transfer requirements.
· Advise and address crew assignments and personnel problems.
· Act as a direct conduit between operations, marketing, maintenance, personnel and dispatch.
· Enforce company policy through leadership and direction.
· Facilitate information and good company relations with outside vendors and customers.
· Responsible for implementation and enforcement of Quality Management System procedures and policies.
· Coordinate and investigate potential new job requirements.
· Direct and manage vessel budgets and Captain’s Club status.
· Travel to vessel and customer locations to observe and direct.
· Operate and test vessels for performance issues and also investigates new runs and/or territories.
· Handle vessel emergencies.
· Direct liaison between the boat crews and upper management.
· Assist in having vessel crossover hoses tested and replaced.
· Make sure that vessels are painted in a timely manner and well maintained by the crew.
· Advise the vessel crew in the use of vapor recovery, tandem transfers and proper drafts on the barges.
· Advise Marketing and Dispatch when swapping tows is required.
· Assist Human Resources Department in the recruiting and interviewing of qualified wheelmen.
· Other skills necessary to perform this job: driving a towing vessel, starting trash pump engines, starting skiff engines.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Must be able to read, write and speak clearly in the English language.
· High School diploma or GED required.
· Ten (10) years of experience in the towboat industry.
· Five (5) years of experience as a licensed Master.
· Have a boat license with the following endorsements; inland, western rivers and great lakes.
· Have a Tankerman’s Ticket.
· Have a TWIC card.
· Have a working knowledge of the navigable waterways that Blessey Marine vessels traverse.
· Good communication skills and self-motivated.
· Experience working on tow boat maintenance and/or around shipyard repair activities.
· Knowledge of steel repair and basis mechanics (pumps, engines, heaters, etc.)
· Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications, including but not limited to Excel and
Microsoft Word software.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Travel three to four months per year by automobile, airplane, and by boat. This position requires driving a vehicle as necessary for errands and business related meetings. Employee and/or applicant must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History check and possess and maintain a current valid driver's license in their state of residence.
