PLEA Community Services is currently seeking a Casual On-Call Instructor for our U-Learn Program. The proposed start date is as soon as possible. This position requires union membership.
The incumbent plans and delivers education to multiple youth and adults in the classroom or other learning environments. Conducts periodic evaluation of students’ performance and progress. Sessions provide supportive and motivational educational experiences for the participants, and are aligned with the goals of their educational plans. Instructors coordinate with school professionals and attend educational integrated case management meetings to direct the ongoing learning plans. The youth and adults who access these services have not experienced success in other residential settings or school environments; they have complex care needs that require supported family care living environments with a heightened level of support and supervision, and a range of specialized services. These youth/adults have been exposed to risk-provoking environments, and present with a variety of disabilities, mental health issues, challenging behaviors and involvement in the criminal justice system.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops and prepares instructional objectives, lesson plans, teaching aids and materials for individuals and/or classes that conform to the program curriculum or individualized education plans. Customizes instructional objectives and lesson plans to students pre-existing level of skills and knowledge.
- Teaches skills and/or knowledge to students in a classroom or other learning environments across the Lower Mainland. Organizes activities such as field trips and talks by guest speakers to supplement instruction when required.
- Develops and prepares curriculum development by evaluating the curriculum on ongoing bases and recommending changes to the supervisor.
- Conducts an evaluation of, and produces monthly report summaries on students’ performance and progress. Administers entry, exit, and periodic testing.
- Maintains records such as session notes and field trip notices as required. Produces and submits periodic reports such as statistical summaries and reports on class/individual activities in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Provides direction and guidance to, and coordinates the activities of case management assistants, practicum students, volunteers and/or family caregivers as required.
- Responds to student issues and concerns which arise or are identified during classes/individual sessions. Refers problems to the supervisor as necessary.
- Maintains current knowledge of developments in the fields related to the U-Learn Educational Services program.
- Obtains feedback from students regarding course content and delivery.
- Performs other related duties as required.

- Demonstrated ability to provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students learning. Excellent interpersonal communication, and conflict management skills, including a demonstrated ability to prepare accurate and comprehensive written reports.
- Demonstrated proficiency in teaching others, developing learning plans, and homework assignments and an ability to work collaboratively with family caregivers and networks that provide support to the students.
- Ability to understand participants learning needs and educational supports that would promote their continued success and development in a variety of subject matters.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others and can implement effective behavior management strategies if required.
- Demonstrated ability to develop supportive relationships with students and their family caregivers who may be reluctant to engage, and to be sensitive and understanding of their social realities including issues of race, culture, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, poverty, and lifestyle.
- Demonstrated ability to develop strong collaborative relationships, work effectively as part of a team, use good judgment, manage conflicts constructively, work independently and be accountable for results.
- Demonstrated ability to develop effective relationships based on mutual respect and trust.
- Knowledge of theory, principles and best practices with respect to providing services to youth and adults who are considered high risk, and have complex care needs.
- Excellent organizational, time and general management skills.
- Bachelors Degree in Education or other related fields. Must hold a valid BC teaching certificate; students from teacher education programs in BC who have completed all required practicum placements, and are in the process of obtaining certification, will also be considered.
- At least three (3) years of recent related experience.
- Experience working in alternative educational programs, with students who self-identify as Indigenous, or with students who have different learning styles is an asset.
- Work or volunteer experience in a residential care facility or foster home model program is an asset.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and familiarity with database programs.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Clearance.
- Must possess a valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certificate or be willing to obtain one prior to hiring.
- Use of Personal Vehicle. This position requires travel in the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley.
- Flexible hours outside normal working hours including days, evenings and weekends based on operational needs.
- Willing and able to work with clients in Maple Ridge, Langley and/or Abbotsford as required.
- Available on an on-call basis.
- A valid B.C. Driver's License (Class 5 or Class 7), and a suitable driver's abstract.
- Documentation that the applicant is legally approved to work in Canada.
