POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Manager of Mirrors, the Program Coordinator will develop and deliver youth-centered programming for young adults facing barriers such as mental health challenges, substance use, and homelessness. This role includes coordinating volunteers, supporting participants 1:1, maintaining program records, and building community partnerships. The Program Coordinator applies trauma-informed, harm reduction, and client-centered approaches to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create and implement young adult-centered programming that is supported and informed by participants, staff and management
- Create and maintain professional relationships with the youth, community, and all stakeholders
- Collaborate with community organizations to bring in appropriate programming
- Orient, oversee and schedule volunteers and other program facilitators
- Empower volunteers and other group facilitators by providing resources, support and assistance to them as needed
- Create a monthly program calendar with the kitchen staff and management
- Manage day-to-day program operations, including assisting group facilitators with set up, client sign-in
- 1:1 support, including life-skill development and unit management
- Clean rooms with participants as needed, wearing appropriate PPE. This can include dealing with human waste, blood, sharps, and other paraphernalia
- Research opportunities to provide new supportive programming
- Maintain all database entries to record volunteer hours, program attendance and information necessary for annual outcome reports
- Build relationships with participants to encourage program engagement
- Perform other relevant job duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 1 year of experience developing and supporting programs
- Minimum 1 year of experience working with vulnerable populations
- Understanding of issues related to mental health needs and addictions
- Experience with harm reduction, client-centered theory and practice
- Familiarity with Youth Services in the Greater Victoria area
- Level 1 occupational First Aid
- Food Safe
- Naloxone training
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Strong problem-solving skills; able to work independently and as part of a team
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, including with clients, staff, and community professionals
- Knowledge of the impacts of addiction, mental health challenges, homelessness, and poverty
- In-depth knowledge of local community organizations and available resources
- Experience working with individuals who face multiple barriers
- Understanding of child and youth development
- Familiarity with the psychosocial rehabilitation model
- Ability to use sound judgment and maintain a positive, professional attitude in high-pressure or challenging environments
- Strong understanding of trauma-informed care principles
- Ability to kneel to the ground to assist with overdoses and medical emergencies
- Physically able to lift up to 30 lbs, walk up and down stairs, and remain on your feet for extended periods
- Comfortable working in environments where substances or substance smoke may be present
- Comfortable working in a pet-friendly environment
