Hours: Monday–Friday, 2:00 PM–5:30 PM

Hourly Rate: $16.50/hour

The Opportunity
The Y-PHD Before and After School Programmer is responsible for delivering high-quality, inclusive programming for school-age children (ages 4–12). This role focuses on physical literacy, cooperative play, and confidence-building, in alignment with High Five and YMCA Healthy Child Standards.
You will play a key role in creating safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate environments that support children’s emotional, social, and physical development—helping build healthy communities through positive youth experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, implement, and actively engage children in physical activities that promote positive development and healthy lifestyles
- Create inclusive, safe, and supportive environments that foster learning and belonging
- Deliver child-centred, development-based programming for school-age youth
- Complete
required administrative duties, including:
- Communication with families
- Program documentation
- Registration support
- Accurate attendance tracking
- Build and maintain positive relationships with children, families, staff, and external partners
- Model YMCA values and leadership competencies while contributing to a positive team environment
- Consistently comply with YMCA policies, child safeguarding standards, provincial requirements, and health & safety regulations
- Use a variety of teaching techniques, including modelling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcing
- Plan and assess indoor and outdoor learning environments that support emotional and social development
- Respond to parent and staff concerns in a timely and professional manner
- Communicate program highlights and challenges with the Site Lead and Program Manager
- Ensure hours are entered in Payworks by established deadlines
- Attend mandatory monthly staff meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Manager
Qualifications & Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience (with strong references)
- 0–2 years of childcare experience, with demonstrated skills related to the role
- Experience working with children ages 4–12
- Ability to plan and lead games, sports, arts, crafts, cultural activities, and field trips
- Post-secondary education in Early Childhood Education or a related field is an asset
- Working knowledge of the school system and community resources is an asset
- Strong cross-cultural communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet competing deadlines
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and rapport-building
- Intermediate Microsoft Office skills
- Valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License or reliable access to transportation
- Flexibility to work outside regular hours as required

- Child Abuse Registry Check
- Proof of valid First Aid and CPR certification
Employees must also complete YMCA Child Protection Training.
